At the MHL it is possible to obtain a doctoral degree in the subjects musicology, music theory and music education. The doctorate serves as proof of the special ability to carry out intensive independent, academic work. This is based on the PhD Regulations, which entails writing a dissertation and doing an oral exam – comprised of disputation und rigorosum. Another mandatory part is the regular participation in the Graduate Colloquium. Successful graduates are awarded the academic degree of Doctor of Philosophy. The offer is open to applicants who are especially qualified and who have completed a diploma, Master's or Master's with a proven focus on one of the three doctoral courses at an artistic or scientific university with a minimum overall grade of "good". Alternatively, the first state examination for teachers with a major in music – also passed with a minimum grade of "good" – is the requirement for admission to the Doctoral Program at the MHL. Further conditions and regulations for admission can be read in the PhD Regulations. The written request for admission with all documents stated in the PhD Regulations, § 8, please refer directly to the Chairman of the Doctoral Committee.
